At the Y, we know that a big part of keeping our communities well, is keeping them safe. We offer training and certification courses in an effort to make and keep our communities safe, not just inside of our walls.
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines is a proud Licensed Training Partner with American Red Cross teaching Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor courses.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer & First Aid: New Certification

The CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (CPRO) program trains professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid (New and Recertifications) are available to both staff and guests. Please verify that the correct/current email address is entered into CORE at the time of registration. Courses are Blended learning (1/2 Online, 1/2 In Person Skills) Precourse will be sent to registered participants 6-8 days prior to class start date and must be complete prior to the in-person course to participate in the skills session.
Fees: Member: $115 Non-Member: $125 Staff: Free

Lifeguarding: New Certification

Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies. American Red Cross courses are designed to arm you with the skills and knowledge to prepare you for a variety of scenarios in and around the water. You will learn how to quickly respond to emergencies both in the water and on land. You will also be trained on drowning and injury prevention, so you can better help those in need. Life-guarding certification classes require an online course to be completed prior to the classroom sessions. Must be 15 on the last day of the class. If you are a staff member, once you are hired you can apply for a refund.

Lifeguarding: Recertification

Already lifeguard certified? American Red Cross Lifeguard certifications are valid for 2 years from when issued. To maintain your certification you must take a lifeguard review course no later than 30 days after your expiration date. After 30 days you will need to take the full certification course to be eligible to work as a lifeguard. If you are a staff member, once you are hired you can apply for a refund.
